Like our own woodpecker, the nuthatch also has short legs with long nails, which gives them a good grip on tree bark. It owes its name to its ability to walk up and down a tree trunk. The nuthatch is a compact forest bird, with a pointed beak and a striking dark eye stripe. They breed in tree cavities and with their nesting urge they always ‘customize’ there nests themselves: when they make of find a hollow trunk, they ‘brick’ the opening of the trunk with mud, even if the entrance is already just the right size. This keeps larger bird species from entering the nest. They line the inside of their nest with dry leaves and wood chips. Nuthatches prefer old trees with woodpecker holes, but can sometimes leave their familiar wooded environment for hazelnuts and peanuts in leafy gardens.
